License Plate Recognition / Number Plate Recognition General Information
Applications
There is indeed a wide range of applications of automatic license plate recognition.
One of the most well know applications, and probably the highest demand is car parking: car park management and car park access control.

In car parking license plate recognition is used to
·document access of parking services
·secure usage of parking houses, prevent car theft
·issue and check electronic "parking tickets", allowing ticketless parking management
·increase services, help drivers to locate their parking position
·and many more...
Car parking is one of the applications where high accuracy is a must. Bellow 95% recognition accuracy,
a number plate recognition system is rarely viable.
A special form of car parking is car park access control. Here the key is to manage vehicle access
to certain areas, such as warehouses, private parking places, restricted zones, etc.
These kind of system handle information such as:
·access control: which car and/or driver can enter/leave the area?
·location of vehilces: which car is in and which is out?
·diary about movements
·increas customer services
·additional information on the vehicles, etc...
From requirements' point of view, these systems are very similar to car park systems, but may even require higher accuracy.
An other well know application is law enforecement. Actually this is the type of application that someone -
who is not familiar with number plate recognition - would think about at first.
In law enforcement, police, border guard, anti-terorist and other similar forces use license plate recognition to
·enforce traffic regulations
·automate penalty processes
·prevent crime
·discover wanted persons and vehicles of black lists
·support intelligent services, etc...
There are concerns about human/personal rights regarding these applications, but certainly license plate recognition
is a very efficient and applied technology of law enforcement. Many red-light violation and speed-limit violation systems
utilises number plate recognition, as well as violation prevention systems.
Other less known applications are related to traffic management: electronic toll collection and traffic monitoring

Some toll collection systems uses license plate recognition to collect road toll by identifying the vehicle,
while other toll systems use number plate recognition for enforcement or "double-checking" purposes.
In traffic monitoring license plate recognition systems can be used to track vehicle routes and thus identify the
main traffic flow directions. This information can be then analised and used to improve road infrastructure that better
meet the traffic's demand.
Plate recognition systems can also monitor the time it takes to vehicles to travel from one point to another,
keeping traffic management centers apprised of transit times along busy streets and highways.
